Whether you've lived here your whole life or recently relocated, you know it's no accident why people fall in love with this Midwestern gem. History, culture, food, exploration and more combine to produce a city in which you could spend years and not come close to experiencing everything Chicago has to offer.
That's why it's no accident that we Chicagoans never seem to be able to stop talking about the city that we love! Here are 7 reasons why:
1. Our Food
Of course, everyone knows that deep dish pizza is the best way to eat a pie, but Chicago is known for other cuisines as well. Chicagoan food is borne out of producing mouthfuls of flavor — quantity and quality.
Another quintessentially Chicago food is the Chicago dog, an all-beef hot dog piled high with tomatoes, mustard, and more and bursting with flavor. For the full experience, Italian beef sandwiches will fill you up as you explore everything our great city has to offer.
2. Our Skyline and Architecture
What makes Chicago unique is its art and architecture and how it has shaped architecture throughout the country. When the city was chosen as the site of the World's Fair in 1893, architects came from all over the world to make their mark on Chicago and it's continued today.
From the many installations at Grant Park and Millennium Park to the mix of classic old buildings and shiny new structures, everything in Chicago appears to have been meticulously planned to create a stunning skyline. This view never gets old from any perspective and it is one of the reasons why we can't stop creating new Chicago Skyline T-Shirts.
3. Our "Colorful" Chicago Mobster History
There's no denying that Chicago has had a bit of a reputation throughout America's history. Political corruption and Gangster legends have created an identity in Chicago that has shaped our mentality and identity on a global scale.
Today, there's (thankfully) no more mafia activity in Chicago, but everyone knows the impact the Al Capone and the Chicago Outfit made on the city around every turn. This gives Chicago a unique history that you truly have to experience to understand, and we're the first ones to embrace it as a part of what makes our city special. A speakeasy tour featuring the crime history of the city inspired us to make this Chicago Mobster Shirt. And of course this Chicago Mobster Hoodie for our winters.
4. Our Dive Bar and Chicago Speakeasy Culture
Along the same lines, being the Mafia city means that Chicago had a huge role to play during Prohibition. Gangsters like Capone and his "family" supplied speakeasies all over the city, places where people could hide in plain sight and enjoy illicit refreshments during the period when serving and consuming alcohol was illegal in the first half of the 20th century.
Even after Prohibition ended, we Chicagoans embraced the grittier side of the city. Even today, dive bars where you can get a cheap drink and speakeasies that you have to hunt for off the beaten path are an undeniable part of what makes people fall in love with our city.
5. Our Annual Hibernation
When the leaves have all fallen off the trees and the lake starts to freeze, we know our city can get cold... really cold. Some people hate the cold, but in Chicago, we embrace it. Sure, there's ice skating at Millennium Park in the winter, but ask any Chicagoan, and we'll tell you: there's nothing better in the winter than bundling up (gear up with our Chicago Beanies), hunkering down, and riding out the cold season, taking pride in what makes us thick-skinned Midwesterners.
6. Our Location and Chicago neighborhoods
Often, people will fall in love with Chicago before they even touch down in our city, because the aerial views are nothing less than breathtaking. Located the banks of Lake Michigan, Chicago has the luxury of being located on a beautiful waterfront.
Where else can you be walking through a bustling, metropolitan city, and suddenly find yourself on a picturesque stretch of white sand beach like you can on the beaches in and around Chicago? Our love for the vibrant and diverse Chicago neighborhoods is a constant motivation to add more apparel to our neighborhood collection.
7. Our Music and Culture
It seems like there's a music festival here every weekend, and that's because we love our music. From huge festivals like Spring Awakening and Lollapalooza to the less-known Pitchfork and Riot Fest, the parks of Chicago are bustling with music and atmosphere throughout the summer.
We are also extremely proud of its musical history: the city has produced acts like Muddy Waters, Gene Krupa, and Benny Goodman, as well as been influential in modern hip-hop with Kanye West, Common, and Chance the Rapper.
